Self-Portrait – Dan Winters
I based my self-portraiture upon the work of Dan Winters’ celebrity portraiture.
Dan Winters began his career in photography as a photojournalist in his hometown. He moved to New York City after winning several regional awards for his work. He is widely recognised for his unusual celebrity portraiture.
In the portraits shown on this page, the subjects don’t show any outwards emotion; using a stoic and empty expression that is hard to read. The majority of the subjects are looking away from the camera; making their expressions more mysterious. I liked this expression as it draws an audience’s eye to the main subject before they look at the surrounding features.
The lighting in the portraits also draws the audience’s attention to the subject and their expression. The background in the photos in a grey colour which, to me, makes the style of the portraits look almost dystopian to look at. I like this style but I decided to use a more orange light to create a more potent light on my face although I did darken it to make the shadow bolder.
Lastly, the majority of the portraits have the shoulders and head in the frame with the head in the centre of the frame (both horizontal and portrait). That element links all of the portraits but each time the major difference between the portraits is the tilt and rotation of the subjects head. I found this as a difficult element to choose for my own portrait.
